How do you train speed (effectively) and do weight training?

I am 200 pounds and run a 5 flat 40 (senior in high school)
I play RB and LB and i'm great through the holes....but i just don't have that speed maintenance

The problem is weight training (for gaining strength, power and weight) is bad for speed...and speed training is bad for weight training...

So how do you do it?

Do you just sprint train, do plyrometrics and gym work and just let it do its thing or is there another way to do it?

It really depends on which position you are going to focus on. You can find a balance in strength and speed training, but you have to look at it from each position. Which one is your primary position? Which position is the ones that your coach needs you to contribute more from?

If you are primarily going to be a LB first, go ahead and commit to more weight training. You will be constantly shedding blockers and making tackles at this position. Speed is a nice asset, but it's not the physical skill you will need the most. For a LB to balance speed training with strength training, I recommend some plyometrics. As a defender, you want to have more closing speed to the ball as opposed to acceleration or overall straight line speed. Plyometrics is going to help you develop that short burst when you make your lateral break towards the ball carrier.

If you are primarily going to play RB first, your speed will be your most valuable asset. As a senior with a 5 flat 40, you aren't going to burn anyone. In this situation, the strength training may help compensate for your lack of top end acceleration ie running over a tackler instead of eluding him. Running short sprints should help. Make sure that you run the sprints with track and field form and not RB form. After you've make some progress in your training, you can deviate from the track and field form to the more practical ball carrying form. You always need a solid fundamental place to start before you change things up. Keep in mind that as a RB, you want to make the first guy miss. It's not always about big runs. Plus, big runs are predicated on making the first guy miss and then it is just endurance to continue sprinting. Make sure to spend some time doing exercises like heel raises along with your squats when you lift. The heel raises will help strengthen your calves which will help you plant better as you make cuts.
